Dear Members:
Wow! What an amazing season we just wrapped up! The Board of Directors feel it was one of our best seasons yet and feel so proud of all we have accomplished on behalf of our members and beloved pool community!
As we look forward to next season, we wanted to communicate some updates, celebrations, and information about next year!
First, we want to celebrate the work, facility updates, and member offerings that we have been able to complete! Within the two past years we:
- Gave all four bathrooms a much-needed update.
- Installed new roofs on all four building structures.
- Resurfaced the main and baby pools with new tile, plaster, and drain covers.
- Upgraded lap lane tiling by widening the lines on the bottom and enlarging the turn crosses at both ends.
- Upgraded the pump room plumbing to assist with pump functionality.
- Replaced, reworked, and upgraded the entire deck drain system.
- Resurfaced the whole pool deck and added a custom logo design at the entry gate.
- Purchased several new tables, chairs and umbrellas with cranks.
- Completed reinforcement work along the creek bank and driveway behind the shelter.
- Broke away from pool management companies to manage the pool ourselves.
- Staffed almost 40 lifeguards, swim coaches, snack shack attendants, and greeters; many of whom are members of our pool community!
- After many years, we finally got our pool chemical system working the way it was designed by utilizing our liquid chlorine tank.
- Replaced several of the LED pool lights inside the pool.
- Increased our Adult Morning Swim group.
- Had a successful swim team season with 180 registered swimmers.
- Offered our first pickleball clinic.
- Extended our pool season through September!
The current board of directors all feel strongly that it is our duty to create the best experience we can for our members. We also believe that we must update and maintain our facilities to set Peace Haven Civic Association up for decades of continued success! We want to proudly claim our spot as one of the best local pool communities and plan to continue moving forward with new projects and membership offerings over the next several years.
As many of you know, Peace Haven is a non-profit civic association. The history of the property is quite fascinating. In the 1920s, C.A. Jones built a park on his land named Peace Haven Lake. Early on, a small lake was made by damming up a brook fed by natural springs. The lake was replaced by a concrete Olympic-sized swimming pool where people could pay to come swim in the summer. In the late 1930s, the park was sold to Jacqueline Dorminy, who used it to create a summer camp. There were 18 freestanding cabins, a kitchen, and an outdoor auditorium. She offered swimming, dancing, tennis, archery, horseback riding, and roasting marshmallows by bonfires. She also created a weekend outdoor dance club known as “Dancing Under The Stars at The Patio,” where she would offer live music, midnight breakfasts, and dancing under the stars “in a sunken garden.” In 1960, it was sold to a developer named Bryan White. He planned to develop a residential area named Peace Haven Estates and create a recreation area with a swimming pool, two tennis courts, a basketball court, a playground, a barbecue area, and a handball area. The recreation area at the time was described as the “largest in Forsyth County.” The non-profit “Peace Haven Civic Association” was incorporated in June 1963. By-laws were created and the first board of directors was established. This amazing history continues with today’s Peace Haven Pool and Tennis and we are so proud of our place in history!
That brings us to today! We all know costs have risen in all areas of our lives. The board of directors met on 10/28 to review our end-of-season results, financials, and budgets. We also began to discuss plans for the future.Upon careful postseason review, we found that our basic operational utility costs have increased dramatically over the past two years. And after some digging, we realized that since 2011, membership dues have only increased twice. Between 2011 and 2017, dues remained the same. In 2017, dues were increased by $30. From 2017 to 2022, dues again remained unchanged and, in 2023, were increased by $50. This is only an $80 increase in the past 13 years. And, as we all know, this has yet to keep up with standard inflation rates. So, due to our rising standard operational costs, our desire to be able to set the pool up for continued success, and our hopes to continue updating our facilities (tennis, basketball, and shelter) over the next 5 years, the board unanimously voted to increase membership dues for the upcoming pool season.
Our 2025 dues will be as follows:
Initiation Fee (for new members): $200
Family Membership: $695 standard. If paid by 1/31, the early bird price will be $670.
Senior Membership: $400 standard.
Your 2025 membership dues can now be paid in your online accounts. Here are a couple of quick by-law reminders regarding paying your membership dues:
- All dues need to be paid by March before we offer membership to people on our waitlist. Currently, we have about 15 families on our waitlist
- If you have an outstanding balance from guest fees, social events, or snack shack purchases, the system automatically adds that amount to your membership dues. This allows you to settle any outstanding balances before the new pool season begins.
- You may pay through the online portal. The card processing system adds a transaction fee. If you would like to avoid the transaction fee, or if you prefer, you can pay with a check instead.
- If paying by check, please print out the “invoice” and include it with your check. All checks should be mailed to our Treasurer at Anson Adams (PHCA Treasurer). Address will show in invoice that you print.
We hope you will continue to join us in our love of PHCA’s history, our excitement for our future, and the joy of our tight-knit pool community. We truly believe we have something very special to continue to offer to our membership and Forsyth County. The board is already planning on adding even more member offerings during and outside of the 2025 pool season, and we look forward to updating you again at the beginning of the new year!
